All the work conducted at museums is ultimately about discussion and interaction. A museum’s core messages serve to encapsulate the values that the museum stands for and based on which the museum operates. They serve to drive both internal discussion within the museum and the museum’s discussions with communities. In addition to facilitating communications, they also contribute to an open operating culture and genuine participation.
In 2018, the Museum Theme Days will focus on examining how to talk about art, cultural heritage and museum work in a way that inspires people and promotes participation. How can we convey the genuine enthusiasm inside the museum to the world outside its walls? And how can museums respond to the enthusiasm exhibited by communities and enable interaction? Whose messages do museums listen to? What kind of challenges and opportunities does the new communication culture present to museums? Do new tools enable genuine dialogue?
