New guide and workshop model support the development of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe

, ,

A project coordinated by the Finnish Heritage Agency has produced two new materials that support the development of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe in Finland and neighbouring regions. The publications provide practical tools for both existing Cultural Routes and new initiatives.

The guidebook prepared in the project presents the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme and its objectives. It offers a step-by-step model for developing a Cultural Route and opens up the benefits and opportunities of participating in the programme. The material contains a wide range of examples and good practices from across Europe.

In addition to the guidebook, a simple workshop model has been developed that includes questions about the different steps of planning, brainstorming and developing a Cultural Route. The model is easily customisable and suitable for drawing up an action plan for the route network, for example.

Cultural Routes present European cultural heritage

The materials were produced in the Cultural Routes for Heritage Cooperation and Capacity Building project led by the Finnish Heritage Agency, which was funded by the Nordic Culture Fund. The project partners included:

  • Arts and Culture Norway
  • The Swedish National Heritage Board
  • Ministry of Culture Estonia
  • National Heritage Board of Latvia
  • Department of Cultural Heritage under the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania

The aim of the project is to strengthen the Council of Europe's Cultural Route activities in Finland, Sweden, Norway and the Baltic countries.

The Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe are international travel routes that highlight the shared European cultural heritage and promote sustainable cultural tourism. The themes of the routes range from architecture and industrial heritage to art and literature. The route networks may consist of museums, cultural sites, research organisations and tourism operators, for example.

The Finnish Heritage Agency is the national coordinator of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme in Finland.
