Commissoning archaeological fieldwork

Ancient relics in Finland are protected by the Antiquities Act (295/63). The Act automatically protects all stationary relics governed by the Act and prohibits activities that might endanger the preservation of a relic.

The Antiquities Act requires that anyone planning or realising a public land-use project or town plan must identify the potential effects of the work on a stationary relic. If the work is expected to have an impact, the completion of the project or plan might require surveys or other measures to be taken. Due to these reasons, an operator planning or realising a land-use project or a town plan may be required to commission archaeological examinations or surveys, such as inventories or excavations, according to Sections 13 and 15 of the Antiquities Act.

The Finnish Heritage Agency has compiled a set of quality instructions on archaeological fieldwork in Finland (Suomen arkeologisten kenttätöiden laatuohjeet, in Finnish), intended for those who evaluate, commission and conduct archaeological fieldwork.

The Finnish Heritage Agency cannot guarantee that this includes all the operators in the sector. If a company or other operator that provides archaeological fieldwork services is missing from the list or a piece of information needs to be amended, the Finnish Heritage Agency asks that contact be made to the Agency’s Cultural Environment Protection Department (Kulttuuriympäristön suojelu).

The operators on the list will be responsible for their own services, quality of work and the results.
